Dr Ronald Lampert of the Australian Museum,Sydney,originally proposed Hawker Lagon for reference purposes for an archaeological site but this was not approved for general use by Geographical Names Board 6/4/1987. The Surveyor-General approved the name as Yuralypila Awi Urtu Lagoon on 29/3/2007 which was subsequently gazetted as the official place name on 5/4/2007. The generic English term 'lagoon' was added in keeping with policy guidelines to better identify the feature type. Derivation is given as either meaning 'two Aboriginal men waterhole' or 'two men drinking'.
